The first annual Good Luck Clover
Newspaperboy Contest was held in 1955
by the Lever Brothers Company, makers
of Good Luck Margarine. Before the
start of the contest newspaper-boys
asked their customers to save for them
the "Clover Stamps" from the Margarine
package. The contest ran for 8 weeks,
early in the year, during which time
newspaper-boys picked up the "Clover
Stamps" from their customers. Each boy
was eligible for as many prizes of his
choice as are covered by the number of
clovers he sent in at the end of the
contest.
In addition to merchandise prizes each newspaper-boy who collected 600 or
more clover stamps was eligible to
compete for ten $1,000 college
scholarships; by submitting the best
essay of 250 words or less on the
subject, "Why I want to go to college."
Prizes ranged from flashlights and
printing presses for 50 clover stamps
to television sets and swimming pools
in the 600-clover category. Valuable
prizes were also offered for 100, 200,
and 300 clovers. All prizes were
illustrated in a comic book that was
distributed to all the boys that
entered the contest. Included in the
entry package was the "Official Record
for the Good Luck Clover Newspaperboy
Contest"
Phil Rizzuto, famous short-stop of the
New York Yankees is pictured on the
record sleeve, and on the recording he
offers special winning tips. What to
say to customers; How to get ladies to
start saving Good Luck margarine
"Clovers," and everything kids need to
know to win. Tried, and proven by other
boys who entered the contest - and won!
This dates the record to either 1956,
or 1957, the last year the contest was
held.
