The 1979 Metallic Creations, Signature
Miniatures, pewter statues collector
sets were commissioned from some of
Americas best know artists and
sculptors. "Each of these distinctive
statuettes of Your favorite baseball
stars are approximately 3-1/2 high, in
pewter-like finish metal." Complete in
every detail. The miniature statues
feature the player's name on the top of
the base, and included a 3-5/8" x 5" black bordered baseball card featuring
a
full color portrait of the player, a facsimile
signature, and stats on the back. The
early statues came with a photographic paper print, with rounded corners, and had a
blank back.
The first issue of the Metallic Creations statuettes originally sold for
$9.95 each. A
set of 4, Aaron, Mays, Ott, and
Kiner sold for $37.95 plus $6.00
Shipping. The previous 4 statues listed
were made available "Plated beautifully
in genuine antique silver, for only
$64.95." The "Hall Of Fame
Series" consisted of eight
"Pewter-Like" statues of Mathewson,
Cobb, Wagner, Hornsby, Gehrig, Johnson,
Ruth, and Speaker sold for $69.95, and
$129.95 for antique silver plated.
Advertised as "Sculptured Metal
Figurines" in Baseball Digest, the
statues sold for $12.00 each, eight for
$80.00. The second wave of statues were
advertised for $13.95 each, and
included Sandy Hawley, a Hall of Fame
jockey.
Metallic Creations, the company that manufactured the statues seemed to
have gone into bankruptcy and ceased
production late into the run so some of
the statues are extremely scarce and
may not exist at all. Cards have
surfaced without statues, and some
statues surfaced without cards. Another
company, Loco International, made an
attempt to continue the series into
1981. The new statues included George
Brett, Roberto Clemente, Steve Garvey,
Thurman Munson, Pete Rose, and Nolan
Ryan. They were made in the
same way as the original series, with the
players name on the base, and original
factory box, but
were slightly larger, and noticeably
unproportional.
The checklist below was compiled using magazine advertisements, Signature
Miniatures baseball cards, statues that
have physically surfaced, and they are
listed in alphabetical order. An
asterisk has been placed next to
statues that are positively known to
exist (21)
