On May 26, 1999, the United States Postal Service issued the Celebrate The Century: 1950s commemorative stamp souvenir sheet in Springfield, Maryland. Two of the fifteen stamps had a baseball theme. "World Series Rivals," celebrating the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodger battles of the 1950s. From 1947 to 1956, the two rivals would face-off in six World Series, four of them played in the 1950s. The Dodgers only winning once in 1955.

The other stamp, "Shot Heard Round The World;" celebrating the walk-off home run hit by New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds on October 3, 1951, to win the National League pennant.

Designed by Howard Paine, and illustrated by Dean Ellis the "Shot Heard Round The World" 33¢ postage stamp depicts the ball hit by Bobby Thompson leaving yard at the New York Giants Polo Grounds.

The backprint on the stamp reads: "The 1951 National League pennant race was decided in a best-of-three games playoff. The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers when, in the ninth inning of the third game, Bobby Thomson hit a three-run homer. Celebrate The Century - 1950s"

The Fleetwood silk First day cover pictured above depicts a group of five men listening to the Dodger-Giant playoff game on the radio. n the wall behind the radio is a picture of; hitter Bobby Thompson, uniform number 23, and catcher Rube walker, uniform number 10, assumingly the moment Thompson hit the three-run home run. The back of the Fleetwood FDC features a brief history of the 1951 pennant race, and the three-game playoffs.

The back also features a "Fleetwood 1929-1999 First Name In First Day Covers" identifier. Fleetwood, in the business since 1929, is the leading First Day Cover producer, making covers continuously since 1941. Fleetwood is the only FDC company that makes a cover for every U.S. postage stamp issued.
