Sometime around the the late
1970's, early 1980s, Budweiser launched
"Part of a Proud City's Tradition" New
York Yankees ad campaign. Five
countertop signs were issued with red,
white, blue, and black illustrations of
Yankee greats; (1) Roger Maris, and
Mickey Mantle, (2) Thurman
Munson, Elston Howard,
and Bill Dickey, (3) Ron
Guidrey, and Tommy John,
(4) Phil
Rizzuto, Joe DiMaggio,
and Allie Reynolds, (5) Babe
Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and
Tony Lazzeri.
Most, if not all of the countertop signs that hit the collectors market
have an unused easel back,
indicating that collectors quickly
grabbed them up. The signs were a
popular Item in the souvenir shops
across the street from Yankee Stadium,
during the 1980s, and were gone by the
1990s. In 1984 Budweiser issued a
similar sign for
Lou Piniella Day, held
at Yankees Stadium on August 5th.
